I am currently using Outlook Express to view the newsgroups and it just seems, well, cumbersome I guess. Anyone suggest something else to use? Was thinking about Thunderbird but thought I would ask for people's opinions before I install anything. I'll be using the software from XP Also what would you suggest for using for the same purpose in Vista? I havent tried the Windows mail yet...
cheers

Good Newsreader software?
Bones, Windows Mail comes with the MS newsgroups already in it ;) (You just need to subscribe to them). Works better than OE IMHO.

Mozilla and its derivatives run fine on Vista:
Mozilla, SeaMonkey, FireFox and Thunderbird. I use SeaMonkey 1.02

I personally use Agent as my newsreader, it seems to work fine in Vista so far. It's availabe at www.forteinc.com

I vote for Forte Agent now I know it runs OK in Vista. Proper
newsreader. I have not touched Lookout Express for many years and Thunderbird whilst good is a pain in the arse to set up. Windows Mail, dunno with MSFTs record of security howlers on OE its gonna take a lot more than a pretty interface to get me go near it.

Some people like the jump on the Agent bandwagon, but I haven't like the changes they've made as of late. Thunderbird might server as a good alternative, but may want to check out MesNews and 40tude Dialog. Both have a nice feel to them and a features that Agent doesn't have yet. And they're free!

Agent (or Free Agent) all the way! I've used it for twelve years, now. I've tried all the alternatives, but none can hold a candle to Agent for ease of use and features. The fact that there are keyboard shortcuts for EVERY task is what sets Agent so far above the competitors. Once you get facile with it, all the others make you feel as though you're stuck in quicksand.

My personal favorite is Thunderbird. The latest version works fine on Vista too. I prefer Thunderbird because it is simple, cross-platform (I also use it on my linux box and it may have a mac version out), and secure. It looks like you received alot of good suggestions, so try a few and see what you like.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I'm going to try a few of them out and see which one I like best :)

There is an OS X version of Thunderbird. In fact, there are OS X versions of almost EVERY Mozilla browser.
However, I personally abhor Thunderbird as a Usenet Client. It is a good mailer, but a very poor Usenet Client. It doesn't have a rich-enough rule set for Usenet reading..
This is why I stand by Forte's Agent Newsreader and Email. I don't use Agent for email, since a large part of my email is HTML, and Agent won't properly render HTML, but it is THE top-of-the-line Usenet client. I've used it on my Windows boxes since it was first a public beta.
Now that I can dual-boot between OS X and XP (and hopefully, soon, Vista) on my Intel iMac, I use Agent exclusively for Usenet access.

Have you tried MT-NW on the Mac? I can't believe you actually prefer Agent for newsreading. It's great for downloading binaries, but is as clumsy as can be for ordinary reading/replying.
Escape, arrow down, Enter to read the next message? What genius came up with that? Even Outlook Express/Windows Mail on Vista does the spacebar thing.

Are you sure you don't have Agent confused with something else? To read the next message in Agent, you just tap the N key. Please describe to me how you could make it any simpler. To ignore a thread, tap I. To watch a thread so that its bodies are downloaded next time, tap W. I think I've tried all of the alternatives (on the PC), and I can't get away from Agent because it is, in fact, the LEAST clumsy news reader I can find. I never have to touch a mouse. I can go through a news group twice as fast with it as I can with Thunderbird, OE, and some of the others. I'd like to try MT-NW, though, if there's a Windows version.

My normal OS X newsreader is Hogwasher 4.2.2. If Forte produced Agent for OS X, I would most certainly use it rather than Hogwasher 4.2.2.
Only a Mac fanatic would not be able to understand why Windows users prefer Agent for NNTP news.
Mike, if you prefer <SPACE> to do a single-key read, then good for you.
However, many Agent users normally just double-click on an article to download it. Older Unix junkies (and idiotic Mac fanatics like yourself) may like accelerator keys, but I certainly don't, and always prefer a mouse action over addressing the keyboard.
We use Agent for its rich feature set, not because we like the key-strokes it offers.
I thought Mac fanatics rave about OS X's lack of a "colorful" interface and its imagined "superior feature set". I guess you haven't paid your Apple dues lately, have you?

No, my friend, you would never want to use ANY Mac Usenet client after having used Agent for several years. They just don't offer the feature set which Forte offers in Agent.
I know. My main computer has been a Mac since 2004. I was immediately struck by the lack of a decent Mac newsreader. I guarantee you that I personally tried EVERY Mac client in existence, except the console apps, and found EVERYONE of them lacking when compared to Agent.
Since Apple released Boot Camp for their Intel machines, I have used Agent daily for my Usenet reading, since my machine is an Intel iMac 17" running Windows XP (and hopefully, soon, Microsoft Vista). God! I LOVE being able to change the appearance of my OS!!! It''s just not possible with OS X (Mac users actually think it is a HERESY to produce a product which will even change the color of the MenuBar, apparently. and PLEASE don't mumble something about "ShapeShifter". ShapeShifter, while it WILL change the color of the MenuBar of a non-Intel Mac, will NOT run on my Intel iMac at all. After looking at OS X for 8 hours, I am ready to go into the john and upchuck for hours, until the plain look of OS X is out of my system for the night.
Thank you, Steve Jobs, for selling me the BEST computer in the world to run Windows XP on, and thank you for enabling me to actually run XP on your machine. Your OS is a piece of crap, and was outmoded with OS 9, but my Apple Intel iMac is certainly a great XP machine.
